Paul Fenniak: Recent Paintings September 9 – October 23, 2004
Forum
Gallery is pleased to present Paul Fenniak: Recent
Paintings.Influenced by the history
of painting from Medieval times and the Renaissance to the present day, Paul
Fenniak has developed his own visual language.
Paul
Fenniak uses a broad range of references, including historical subjects and
autobiography.In Paul Fenniak’s hands,
close family and friends become fictional characters in a disjunctive narrative. Light falling on the folds of a dress, shirt,
or coat; the smallest gesture of a hand; perspective distortion; all contribute
to a psychologically loaded environment.
Fenniak’s
paintings have luminous surfaces and compelling images that offer a combination
of disquiet, uncertainty, urgency, calm, and spirituality. His painting style includes a contrast of
inner light and particular attention to detail, texture and atmosphere.
Fenniak's
pictures, whether single or multiple figure compositions, are not scenes of
everyday life, rather, they are fictions, like theatrical illusions. They reference both the world of appearances
and the constructions of the imagination. His approach, emotionally charged, fraught with ambiguity, and intimate,
demands the viewer's total involvement.
Paul Fenniak was born in Toronto, Canada in 1965. He received his M.F.A. from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada and his B.F.A. from Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada. Paul Fenniak: Recent Paintings opens with a reception on September 9 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm, and will be on view through October 23, 2004. A full color catalogue will accompany the exhibition. |
