Alan Magee: Parables
“The deeper significance of Magee's
achievement has sometimes been obscured by a blinding technical virtuosity. His
paintings, drawings, collages and monotypes heighten awareness of the physical
world even as they allude to a conceptual reality hidden just beneath surface
appearance." Christopher Crosman, Director, The Farnsworth Art Museum On October 9,
2003, Forum Gallery will present Parables, an exhibition of new works by the American Realist, Alan
Magee. Known for his
remarkable ability to capture forms in nature, Alan Magee’s acrylics and
watercolors range in subject and size from large and powerful images on
breathtaking surfaces to delicate and precise works on paper.
His paintings invite wonder at the inherent dignity and beauty of
simple objects such as letters, tools and stones that are imbued with a
history of communication, labor and time.
Among Magee's works are a number of paintings of beach stones discovered by the
artist on the Atlantic shores of New England. These meticulously crafted
paintings not only reflect his fascination with texture and surfaces, but also a
larger thematic interest in mutability and the passage of time.
Magee’s works can be seen in many public collections including The Fine Arts
Museums of San Francisco, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Portland Museum of
Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Arkansas Art Center, and the Columbus Museum
of Art. His work is included in the private collections of Mobil Oil, The
Atlantic Richfield Co., Lucasfilm Inc., the Bank of Japan, the Union Trust Bank,
and the personal collections of Johnny Carson, Mike Nichols and Diane Sawyer,
Nicholas Cage, Morley Safer, and the late Billy Wilder, among many others. A major traveling exhibition of Alan Magee’s work begins this fall at the James A. Michener Art Museum, Bucks County, PA from October 25, 2003 – January 26, 2004, traveling to: Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, ME, May 30 – September 6, 2004; The Museum of Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX, October 3, 2004 – January 2, 2005 and to the Frye Art Museum, Seattle, WA, January 29 – April 24, 2005.
